Project timelines vary depending on complexity, size, and current workload. An estimated timeline will be provided during consultation.

We do try to complete our commissions between 4-8 months.

Cleaning - Before work can begin to build the gk, all pieces must go through a cleaning process to remove mold release that might be present from the manufacturer. We use a degreaser solution and soak the pieces overnight. The pieces are then set in an ultrasonic cleaner. The final step involves washing off the degreaser solution with water.

Prepping - The prep stage can be the longest part of the commission. It starts with removing tabs and seam lines, filling and sanding imperfections, and adjusting gaps and connection points. To connect the pieces and to increase stability, metal rods and/or magnets will be added. The pieces will then undergo the priming and sanding, a multi-step process to identify and remedy additional imperfections.  

Painting - Once the cleaning and prep stages are complete we can now start painting!  A majority of the kit will be airbrushed to give the best flawless finish but some details will be hand painted. We primarily use lacquer paint when airbrushing. All kits painted by Aku’s Atelier will have hand painted eyes using a combination of enamel and lacquer paints, even if decals are provided. When detailing or painting props, acrylics are sometimes used.

Assembling - Assembly involves gluing pieces together for final fitment and assessing fit and finish of the completed kit. To prevent damage during shipment, some parts might require final assembly by the client. Instructions will be provided as needed.

Packaging - Every kit will be returned in a custom ruggedized transit case to prevent damage during delivery. Pieces will be paper wrapped and secured within the transit case. 

Absolutely. We welcome licensed customer-supplied kits for assembly, painting, and finishing services.

We do not accept recasts, 3d printed kits, or unlicensed/unapproved/AI based works.

Due to the nature of garage kits, the level of effort required to build and assemble a piece can vary between kits and require hours of labor. Before the painting even starts the pieces must be cleaned and prepped. Part fitment, gaps, un-even seam lines, air bubble pin holes, and missing connection points will add hours of work to a project. Detailing can also add more time to a project when masking, decals, and embellishments are required.

Every kit is unique and finishing will make it one of a kind.
